Toyota Expands Commitment to HBCU Excellence Through Three-Year Agreement with MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off and Celebration Bowl

Agreement includes presenting sponsorship, title sponsorship of halftime shows, Red Lobster Band of the Year sponsorship and Champion’s Circle presented by Toyota

ATLANTA, Ga. — Toyota has expanded its commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, HBCU athletics and the culture surrounding Black college sports through a new three-year agreement with ESPN Events that includes the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off and the Cricket Celebration Bowl.

Under the agreement, Toyota will serve as presenting sponsor of both the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off and the Cricket Celebration Bowl. Toyota will also become the title sponsor of the halftime show for both events, creating a major brand presence during two of the most visible celebrations of HBCU football, music and culture.

In addition, Toyota will become a sponsor of Red Lobster Band of the Year and the presenting sponsor of Champion’s Circle presented by Toyota, further aligning the brand with some of the most prominent and culturally significant HBCU platforms in the country.

The expanded partnership connects Toyota with the full arc of the HBCU football season — from the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off presented by Toyota, which opens the college football calendar in Week Zero, to the Cricket Celebration Bowl presented by Toyota, which crowns the HBCU Football National Champion. The partnership also supports the pageantry, tradition and excellence of HBCU marching bands through Red Lobster Band of the Year, which crowns a national champion, and the Toyota halftime shows, while helping recognize championship leadership through the Champion’s Circle presented by Toyota.

“Toyota’s investment in these properties represents more than a sponsorship — it is an investment in the institutions, traditions and communities that make HBCU athletics so powerful,” said John Grant, Executive Director of all three events. “Through this three-year collaboration, Toyota will have a meaningful presence from kickoff weekend to championship weekend, including the halftime shows, and band championships, that celebrate one of the most important parts of the HBCU consumer experience.”

As title sponsor of the halftime show for both the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off and the Cricket Celebration Bowl, Toyota will be connected to the energy, creativity and cultural impact that define HBCU football Saturdays. The halftime show has long been one of the signature elements of the HBCU experience, blending marching band excellence, school pride, entertainment and tradition into a showcase that resonates far beyond the field.

“Toyota is honored to join ESPN Events in support of these beloved HBCU events and the communities they celebrate,” said Andrew George, Senior Analyst of Community Based Marketing at Toyota. “This three-year agreement allows us to build a meaningful presence across the HBCU football season, from the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off to the Cricket Celebration Bowl, while recognizing the culture, leadership and excellence that define Black college sports. Together with Burrell Communications Group, we are proud to help bring this partnership to life and look forward to seeing it on the field.”

The Champion’s Circle presented by Toyota will add Toyota’s support to one of the Celebration Bowl’s most meaningful traditions. Each year, the Champion’s Circle jacket is presented to one head coach, welcoming that individual into an elite fraternity of Celebration Bowl winners. The jacket is more than a ceremonial honor — it is a lasting symbol of championship excellence.

It forever identifies the recipient not only as an outstanding coach, but as a coach who stood on the biggest stage in HBCU football and led his program to a national championship. The Champion’s Circle jacket marks a permanent place in history. It signifies that in that season, on that day, against the best of HBCU football, that coach and that program reached the pinnacle.

The Red Lobster Band of the Year adds another important layer to the partnership, celebrating one of the most recognized and beloved elements of HBCU culture. The event was created to establish a competitive national platform for HBCU marching bands and crown season-long national champions in Division I and Division II. With rankings tied to performances throughout the season, every halftime show carries meaning, encouraging bands to deliver their best performances each week while driving fan engagement across HBCU football.

“From the opening kickoff of the HBCU football season to the crowning of a national champion, Toyota’s presence will help us continue to grow these events while honoring the traditions that make HBCU sports unlike anything else in college athletics,” added Grant. “This three-year commitment is a major step forward for the events, the conferences, the schools and the fans.”

Together, the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kick-Off, Cricket Celebration Bowl, Toyota halftime shows, Red Lobster Band of the Year and Champion’s Circle presented by Toyota represent a year-round celebration of HBCU excellence — from the field, to the bandstand, to the classroom, to the broader community.
